“Yes, this is my real job.”

I’m guessing if you do anything other than direct sales, you’ve never had anyone question whether it’s a real job. Even stay-at-homes have serious clout when it comes to how hard they work and everything they do for their families, but for some reason, people tend to assume that if you’re involved in direct sales, it’s just a hobby or a fun side gig.

I often have trouble telling people what I do for a living. Not because I’m ashamed or don’t want people to know, but because people have a hard time believing that a direct sales business can support our family of six.

It seems more feasible to tell people that my husband has some killer corporate job where he works long hours, and I do Scentsy on the side as a fun little hobby. I think that’s the general perception of direct sales these days. “It might be a fun hobby, but it’s unlikely to be a real business.”

On the contrary, this has been our “real” and only job for the past six and a half years. We work part time from home spending our time selling quality home fragrance, and meeting new people while coaching and encouraging men and women from all over the world. Our little Scentsy business did over $22 million in retail sales in 2016.

And believe it or not, we’re not the only ones. In fact, our team has hundreds of women who are now not only running their own Scentsy businesses but also leading teams of other women (and men!) to improve their families financial situations for the better.

Our gig isn’t a get rich quick scheme. It’s not a pyramid scheme. It’s a legitimate business, that is centered around great products, good relationships, and personal growth and leadership.

On our team of almost 8,000 women and men we have 156 women in leadership positions at 3 different levels of leadership: Director, Star Director and SuperStar Director.

Here’s how it breaks down:

We have 118 Directors. A Director has a team that produces at least $10,000 in wholesale on a monthly basis. The average income of those directors is $15,589 annually. All of our Directors run their Scentsy businesses part time in the nooks and crannies of life.

We have 21 Star Directors. A Star Director has a group of consultants that produces at least $30,000 in wholesale a month, and they have at least 2 Directors that have prompted from within their team. The average annual income of our Star Directors is $42,303. Most of our Star Directors also work their businesses part time while working outside the home, being moms, or just living life.

And lastly we have our SuperStar Directors. Our team has 17 of these amazing ladies. Their groups produce at least $80,000 a month in wholesale and they have at least 4 Directors that have promoted from within their teams. The average annual income of our SuperStar Directors is $219,313.

In addition to those leaders, we have 7,792 other men and women in non-leadership roles on our team who are working their businesses their way, on their time, making as little or as much money as they want to work for.

So when people wonder if this is our “real job” I very rarely list out all the details of what it looks like on this side of it, but yes, it’s our “real job”! Ten years ago, I didn’t know this would be our thing, but it is, and we’ve become crazy passionate about the opportunities that Scentsy provides to the world. Men and women can work from home, part time, and create a substantial income for their families. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it’s real.

The women I mentioned above didn’t make this their “real job” by just hoping it would grow and hoping things would go well. They made this into a real opportunity by being committed to working hard and consistently towards a goal.

This business is simple, but it’s not easy. It’s simple because, like I mentioned above, it’s about relationships and personal growth and passion for a product you love. It’s not easy because there is no boss. There is no one to tell you to follow up or follow through or keep at it. After spending $49, you own your own business and ultimately your own future. {That’s beautiful AND scary right?!}

So in honor of the scary and beautiful parts of direct sales, it’s time bring to light the perceptions and the reality surrounding being a Scentsy consultant. Even though it can be challenging at times, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I truly think everyone should give it a whirl. It’s changed my life and the life of my babies and my husband, and I am beyond grateful for that.
